Located in
the rural Drôme valley (BioVallée), 8 Fablab Drôme acts as a resource for the
whole department, far from major urban centers. Rather than offering digital
fabrication for its own sake, it works hand in hand with local communities through
territorial surveys, hackathons and shared projects. Its FabUnit turns plastic
waste collected locally into furniture, partnering with a recycling center in
Die and a back-to-work company in Loriol, keeping value creation within the
territory. As the only fablab in France partnered with the national family
allowance fund (CAF) on its "PS Jeunes" programme, it gives rural
youth access to skills usually concentrated in cities. By blending traditional
rural know-how with digital tools, and hosting a coworking space and a
renewable-energy cooperative, 8 Fablab Drôme strengthens the resilience,
autonomy and economic relocalization of a territory often overlooked by
innovation policies.
